Norway and the BRICS: Mapping Opportunities and Challenges

The project is expected to contribute to strengthen NUPI’s research on emerging powers and on the interlinkages between business and foreign policy.

Through a series of four policy briefs, the «Norway and the BRICS» project investigates the ways in which Norway has become increasingly involved with the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) countries, and the challenges and opportunities which this involvement represent. The BRICS countries are widely considered to be the most important “emerging economies” in the global system, and firms as well as states are devising strategies to handle their relations with these states. Does it make sense for a country like Norway to do likewise, and what can be gained by doing so? Even though the BRICS are a heterogeneous group of countries, the project highlights areas of commonality where a more standardized policy may be applied and lessons learned can be transferred, while also highlighting areas where specific challenges need dedicated attention.
